RITE OF THE NIGHT OF HEROES

by RigR

Godhi of Tyr

1. GODHI: Sounds the Horn three times.

2. GYDHJA: Offers prayer to Billing.

3. HIGH REDE: The Hammer Rite.

GODHI: Hail Tyr, One-handed,

Hail Warrior and Justice bringer.

To you do we give honor this

night as we raise high the

names of our fallen.

ALL: Hail Tyr!

GYDHJA: Hail Valkyries, the Shield-Maidens,

Hail Warrior Warders of Valhalla.

Your names we praise this

night as we raise high the

names of our fallen.

ALL: Hail the Valkyries!

Load drinking horn and hallow with hammer.

GODHI: Upon this night, and with these rites,

do we honor our fallen kin. Those who

fought and died in the preservation of

our folk, our freedom, and our faith.

It is to these worthy fallen, the

Einherjar, that we give our honor.

Hail Wariors, Sword-thanes of old.

Hail Einherjar of Valhalla's high halls.

To you we do offer this Horn and

raise your names on hight.

ALL: Hail Einherjar!

The Godhi drinks, then passes the horn to the Gydhja. After the Gydhja

drinks, the High Rede steps forward with soil from the Burrow Agnar to further

consecrate the Altar, and bless the ground of Fjallaheim.

HIGH REDE:

This Blessed earth, Fjorgynn's great gift,

from Agnar's grave did come;

may'st open the road, for well-wishing wights,

from burrow to blessings, earth blessed.

The Gydhja passes the Horn to the High Rede. After the High Rede drinks, the

Assistant High Rede steps forward with a yew branch to further consecrate the

Altar, and give to the fire.

ASSISTANT HIGH REDE:

This yew branch blessed, Holda's great gift,

from Agnastead did come;

may'st open the doors, between Gods and men,

on this great-blessed Hero's Night.

The High Rede passes the Horn to the Assistant High Rede. After the Assistant

High Rede drinks, the Horn is passed deosil. When all have partaken of the

Horn, it is returned to the Godhi and the remainder is poured to the earth on

the North side of the Altar as an offering to the Einherjar.

GODHI: Hail Warriors of our kin and brethren. To

you do we give even greater honor. Let

your names be heard through the Worlds

and you deeds be known to all.

The Horn is refilled and passed deosil and each participant will name a

Warrior of his/her kin or ancestors, and the deeds thereof. This will

continue untill all are named. The Horn is never to be emptied.

GODHI: Hail the Einherjar!

ALL: Hail the Einherjar!

The final Horn is poured to the North as an offering. The Roll of Honor is

taken up (a parchment scroll with the names and deeds of our ancestors).

GODHI: Hail Hermodh, Message-bearer and

Errand-rider. Wend well these words

to all the Worlds and well-wishing wights.

ALL: Hail Hermodh!

The Godhi then places the scroll in the candle flame (or the fire) and is

burnt to ash.

GODHI: Our work is wrought, it cannot be broken.

At this point, all who will not be attending the Death Watch will proceed down

the mountain.
