Update...........

PRAYER IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The 1962 U.S. Supreme Court decision (Engel versus Vitale) that banned

mandatory prayer in tax-supported schools started a fierce debate which will

continue as long as the decision stands. Currently, there is a new push by

certain religious groups to get prayer back into public schools. Laws to

permit certain forms of prayer in public schools are now being considered in

ten states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma,

Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennesee, Virginia). Although the guidelines of

the present push call for "nonsectarian and non proselytizing" prayers, one

leader of the movement said: "It would be great to help spread the word of

Jesus"---leaving one to wonder what he thought non sectarian and non

proselytizing meant. Realistically, it would be impossible to write a prayer

that would simultaniously satisfy Asatruers and Buddhists, Christians and

Hindus, Muslems and Jews---let alone Atheists. Face it: any prayer currently

approved for public school use will be christian and its use will make life

harder for Heathen children than it is at present.
