Skadhi (Skaoi)- Vanir, Skadhi is the Jötun wife of the sea God Njordh; a huntress and a skier, whose name means “Scathe” or “Scathing (in words)”, or even “scandi” (as per Scandinavia, i.e. Land of Skadhi).

In order to avenge the death of her father, the gian Thjázi, (in reference to the theft of Idunn’s apples) Skadhi took up arms and went to attack the Gods in Asgard, demanding weregild; being an only child, the task was hers to fulfill. The Gods, wanting to appease her anger, offered her the choice of  one of their number for a husband, under the condition that: primarily they must make her laught, and secondly that she choose a god by his feet alone to wed. It has also been said that the gods threw Thjázi’s eyes into the sky, and they became as stars.

Loki made Skadhi laught by tying a thong at one end of his testicles, the other to a goat; he made the goat bolt, they screamed pulling each the other until he fell upon Skadhi’s knee, in turn making her laugh. This was only the beginning of their spiteful relationship; as Loki later makes reference to his sleeping with her.

Later though, it is Skadhi who will have the last laugh (she had the first laugh with Loki during the “goat incident”, it seems only fitting that she have the last as well), by tying a venomous serpent over Loki’s head. Thus Skadhi is also associated with snakes, and especially venom; be it venomous poison or venomous words. Skadhi is not the type to lose an argument, or dispute, she can be quite domineering.

As for the second, Skadhi was to pick a God to wed, solely by viewing his feet; some say that she was blindfolded, and saw only the feet, others say she was not. She wanted to pick Baldr, figuring that his feet were the fairest; to her surprise, she picked Njordh.

Skadhi represented the mountains, Njordh represents the sea. Is it not true that if Skadhi represents the mountains of Scandinavia, or the beaches of earth, that all she would see of the sea are “its feet” (crashing waves on her shores)? It is no wonder that she found Njordh’s feet to be the fairest, she was most familiar with them.

Skadhi’s marriage failed because Njordh preferred to live by the sea, he disliked the howling wolves of Skadhi’s home. Skadhi, being “earth oriented” preferred her father’s home in the Mountains, Thrynheim, “Home of Noise”. The sound of wind-whispering pines are waves enough for Skadhi, she dislikes the screaming of gulls as much as Njordh dislikes the howling of wolves. However, she still remains the “Queen of the Vans”, and plays an active role in the lives of the Vans. In this way her marriage worked out in her favor.

Skadhi is the goddess of the mountains, although she does not prefer mountains within close proximity of the shore (not only because of the screaming gulls, but she would be reminded of her failed marriage); she is also the goddess of vengeance, death and even stealth—especially while hunting or stalking. She is sometimes even associated with the night, or  darkness. She has come, to some, in dreams holding a spear with a dark point  often resembling obsidian, her bow always close by, often on her back. She is aggressive before she is passive, and is very accustomed to getting her way; although she can be a nurturing figure when it comes to her kin, she can be quite the opposite with her foes.

Skadhi, in one instance, was said to have married Odhinn and bore him sons, the Skjoldungs, although this is not widely accepted.

Thrudh- Aesir, Thruð is an obscure goddess and little is known about her other than she is the daughter of Þórr and Sif. However, we in Skergard give her much more credit than that.

Thruð is one of the more promenant of the Asynjur in this modern day and age. She is the youngest among the Asynjur.

The young gods and goddesses are very important in our modern world. Since the gods have evolved as we have, the youngest of them are more prominent in this day and age. This does not mean that the elder gods are fading from importance. What this does mean, however, is that the younger gods and goddesses are just as involved in our lives as their parents, if not moreso.

As Sif represents the “Gatherer of Grains”; Thruð represents the work behind sowing the fields and the labors of organized agriculture.

Before the coming of Thruð, mankind simply gathered berries and nuts to survive, ignorant of sowing fields, planting crops, or the inequity of modern agriculture.

As humanity continued to evolve, Sif taught Thruð the aspects of gathering nuts and berries, and from her grandmother Fjorgynn (Jord) she learned the ways of the soil. When Thruð came of age, she taught humans the importance of working with the Earth, that is, agriculture. She also taught mankind how to use what they grow, and how to grind grain to make flour for baking bread.

Thus, Thruð is associated with the hearth, because she spends many hours there cooking, baking, and keeping the fire. As the fire-keeper and bread-baker, her color is orange. (Not to mention that Red and Yellow make Orange, i.e. Þórr and Sif combined). What time not spent cooking, she spends in the field, sorting the Earth from the stones and rocks.

Thruð is often seen as a large, strong woman whose hair is pulled back, but nevertheless messy. Her clothes are generally torn and dirty; as a laboring woman, she is too busy to notice her conditions.

Because of her strength, she is likened to a giantess. Rocks and stones that are sacred to her are the ones turned over with the plow.

Ullr- Vanir, The god of snowshoes, skiing, hunting, archery, winter, precision and coordination with physical skill, and the shield. His name means “Brilliant One” or “glory” and he is often associated with the Aurora Borealis.

Ullr possesses warrior-like attributes, and is called upon in individual combat. He resides in Ydalir, yew dales. Stepson of Thórr, Sif’s child from a previous union with Orvandil, or possibly a rime-thurse, he watches over those in need; he often decides the outcome of wrestling matches and fist-fights.

Although not much has been recorded about Ullr, he was very prominent at one time. According to one tradition, Odhinn offered Ullr’s favors as a reward to one who would aid him, which would imply that Ullr may have been greater than the Alfather at one time. In addition, Ullr’s name appears as part of many Swedish and Norwegian place-names. In the chronicles of Saxo Grammaticus, Ollerus is the equivalent of Ullr, and is said to have traveled over the waves.

Ullr was worshipped in central and southeastern Sweden together with south and southeastern Norway as per evidence of place-names. According to Magnus Olsen, an authority of Norway, Ullr is listed to have 33 sacred places named after him.

Although Ullr is not of direct lineage to the Alfather, he is considered to be Aesic, although technically, like Skadhi he is a major outdweller whom has attained Godhood.
